Restoring a Water Connection in Downtown Howell, Michigan

Recently, the team at Pete Black Plumbing was called to a property in downtown Howell, Michigan, to address a critical issue with a water connection. The stop valve had been improperly installed, which not only violated code but also led to a significant leak. The entire setup was outdated, with non-compliant sprinkler connections, and it was clear that a complete overhaul was necessary.

To bring the system up to code, we upgraded the water line to a 1-inch diameter and removed the faulty sprinkler connections. Our approach involved creating a bore pit and pulling a new waterline to the house. By feeding the new pipe through the existing hole where the old line was, we avoided disturbing the surrounding ground or interfering with other utilities like gas lines. By the end of the day, the water connection was fully restored, ensuring a reliable and compliant system for the homeowners. Our job is to help!

Tips for preparing your residential plumbing in a cold Michigan Climate:

  • Insulate your pipes: Locate and insulate pipes that are most likely to freeze, such as those near crawl spaces, attics, or outer walls. You can use pipe sleeves, heat tape, heat cable, or newspaper. Ideally, water infrastructure is not installed in your home or businesses outer walls, pipes should be located in the interior walls of your home.
  • Keep the house warm: Keep the thermostat at a constant temperature of at least 55°F to prevent pipes from freezing white you’re away. You can also open cabinet doors in the kitchen and bathroom to allow warm air to circulate to the walls containing pipe.
  • Disconnect hoses: Disconnect garden hoses and shut off and drain the water from pipes leading to outside faucets as winter approaches. Michigan winters will freeze everything! This also goes for sprinkler systems.
  • When you’re away: If you’re going to be away from home for an extended period, you can shut off the water supply at the water meter and drain all the pipes. You can also ask a friend or neighbor to check your house daily to make sure it’s warm enough.
