The history of Pete Black Plumbing

The Beginning...

Pete Black of Pete Black Plumbing

Pete Black Plumbing was founded in 1979 by Pete Black & his wife Coral. They were the company's only employees as they worked out of their home in Livingston County during the early years, building the company's foundation. In 1997, Michigan natives Greg Johnson and Justin Becker were two young guns at Lakeland High School when they first started working in the plumbing industry. Greg was even known to drive the plumbing truck to high school. In 1999 Greg and Justin began working for the same plumbing company out of Detroit, mostly digging trenches and sewers by hand. This is when they started their apprenticeship in the plumbing industry, riding with experienced plumbers and making house calls.

In 2001 the pair split up, and began working for different plumbing companies specializing in separate areas of the industry. Greg would eventually specialize in commercial and factory buildings, and Justin in high-end residential homes. This is where they gained years of experience in the plumbing industry, both earning different licenses and certifications within the field along the way.

Starting his own plumbing company...

In 2008 Greg pioneered his own plumbing company where he performed all aspects of plumbing with his license. He even traveled the country building microbreweries. During this era, as Gregs business expanded, he was trained by Pete Black in water treatment systems and water softeners. Besides plumbing, the three of them bonded over their passion for snowmobiling. As history would have it, in 2016 Greg and Justin decided to partner with Pete Black in the management of Pete Black Plumbing. At the time there was only one employee but not long after the ownership of the company transitioned, they grew the company out of Pete's house, and to 5 employees.

Currently there are 11 employees and 7 work trucks, and they operate out of a larger facility at 2440 W Highland Road in Howell. They continue to specialize in plumbing for new construction, underground plumbing work, residential, commercial and industrial. Pete Black Plumbing is bridging the gap as they pass on the skilled trade of plumbing and water treatment to the next generation. They are one of the few companies who offer an apprenticeship program. They continue to improve their skills and quality of work with further education, and staying on top of new innovations within the industry. Pete Black the man is still involved behind the scenes with the company.
